New Release: "Waiting" by The Nervous Girls

“Waiting” is the new single from The Nervous Girls and the first to feature their latest member, Amanda L, on bass.  It is an amazing song which vocalist Anne describes as being “in a bad hot/cold relationship that will surely end but wanting to keep it going.”  It really captures those moments in a relationship where you really want things to work but fear that the longer you stay in it, and the more effort you put into it the harder it will be when it falls apart.  Anne’s voice really conveys conflicting emotions, sounding like she is longing for the good times this couple must have once shared, while recognizing that this indifferent partner no longer seems to care for her nor, willing to make things work.

Amanda L’s voice really contrasts with Anne’s voice perfectly and seems to speak for the partner who insists “this is what comes next, the peace I find in nothingness.”  This contrast between the two is present in the sounds of the guitar and bass as well.  The use of shimmer on Anne’s guitar creates an ethereal feeling complementing the wistfulness in her voice.   Amanda L’s bass feels almost like an alarm, pulsating and adding a sense of foreboding of how she will answer question “Are we headed for disaster?”  Morgan’s drums are just incredible, with perfectly timed fills, knowing when to make the song feel more alive, and really adding to the conflict between the two partners.  Between the drums and Amanda M on guitar they do a great job of really setting the scene for the two vocalists, unifying their very distinct parts.  The entire piece is just constructed so beautifully and sounds incredible.

Since first listening to this song, I find myself belting out “Are we careening toward disaster” and just having the song stuck in my head.  I have gone back to the zine (which will be released with the full album) for Waiting three times now, even more compelled now having read the lyrics and even since first sitting down to write this.  The extra insight into these lyrics has been really enlightening and moving.  It is certainly worth taking your time going over the zine to read Anne’s analysis of “Waiting”, as well as her experiences that influenced her to write the song.

The Nervous Girls have a 10-track album, featuring the single “Waiting,” coming out in the fall of 2021.  The single will be out Thursday April 1st, on Spotify, Bandcamp and other platforms.  The Nervous Girls also have an EP, “Hunger”, which was released on February 9th of 2019.  I cannot recommend this band enough and I am personally really excited for when its safe enough to have live shows again so I can go see them perform!
